Rock Steady Boxing

Bend Rock Steady Boxing is Central Oregon’s only boxing fitness program for those living with Parkinson’s disease. Using the nationally acclaimed Rock Steady Method, certified personal trainer Steve Utzman offers a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness routine that can dramatically improve the ability of Central Oregonians with Parkinson’s to live independent lives.

Why boxing?

Boxing fitness therapy is on the forefront of a national movement in the fight against Parkinson’s, with more and more studies revealing its power to slow the progression of the disease. Boxing requires a combination of endurance, strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, hand-eye coordination and the ability to react appropriately to strategic situations. Boxing improves balance and stability, and the rapid movements involved in jumping and punching increase overall muscle fire-ability.

At Bend Rock Steady Boxing, boxers can expect to experience:

  • Improved self-confidence in speaking, walking and fine motor skills
  • Slower disease progression
  • A fighter’s spirit

How does it work?
Training options include weekly small-group classes or one-on-one individual training — all of which are non-contact. Rock Steady Boxing attacks Parkinson’s at its neurological points, giving the participant more command and control over his or her body. While focusing on overall fitness, workouts might include: Jump rope, double-ended bag, speed bag, ring work, focus mitts, heavy bags, jump rope, core work, calisthenics and circuit weight training.

Who can participate?
Our clients — men and women, young and old — range from recently diagnosed to those who have lived with the disease for years. Rock Steady Boxing participants not only work hard, but they have fun, forming friendships with others who truly understand what it’s like to live with the disease. Bend Rock Steady Boxing classes are a safe and welcome place to exercise for people with Parkinson’s disease.

When and where are classes held?

Am I required to attend to attend every class?

  • To receive the maximum benefit we recommend that boxers attend both sessions per week, but there are no minimum attendance requirements.

Can anyone with Parkinson’s participate — no matter what their age or condition?

  • Nearly everyone with Parkinson’s disease can participate and receive benefit from Steve’s Rock Steady Boxing classes. Some participants will require a caregiver partner to assist in each session. Individuals of all ages benefit from our program. However, we strongly encourage you to discuss your participation with your physician prior to your first workout.

What should I wear to class?

  • We recommend you wear comfortable gym clothes, including athletic shoes. We supply the boxing equipment for your use during the class.

Do I need a physician’s recommendation to attend Bend Rock Steady Boxing classes?

  • Yes, we require that every participant have a physician’s release. We recommend that our boxers always discuss any form of exercise they are doing with their physicians as part of their overall wellness plan.

Fight Parkinson’s Disease

“I began working with Steve Utzman 7 years ago. Throughout he has been with me as we work to delay the progression of PD.

Steve brings an enormous amount of experience and knowledge to the training. His knowledge and understanding of neurological disorders is shown through what we do to combat the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. He brings knowledge of training techniques used in other sports from ballet dancers to skiers to boxers to weight lifters. He tailors my program to what I need on a day-to-day basis.

What physical capabilities I have can be directly attributed to Steve's knowledge and efforts on my behalf.”
